If you’re driving along the Riga–Valmiera Highway, you can’t fail to notice Raganas Ķēķis – “The Witch’s Kitchen” – at the junction with the Limbaži and Turaida roads. The tale about the origin of the name tells of the beautiful serving-maid at the old inn, which still stands today. It was because of her that the men of the village and passing travellers alike spent their last penny drinking at the inn, something that so angered the village women that they branded the girl a witch. The present roadside inn Raganas Ķēķis is a new building, closer to the road. The landlord of Raganas Ķēķis has transformed this travellers’ rest spot so that it now caters not only for men, but also for women and children.
